What is Tenuto?
The name tenuto is derived from the musical underscore added to a note to tell the performer to give that note its maximum value.
We believe that every person should be given the opportunity to find their maximum value and creative therapies is an effective way to help you start on your personal journey.
What are arts therapies?
The art therapies are registered forms of psychotherapy and include music therapy, art therapy, dramatherapy and dance movement psychotherapy.
Practitioners are trained to Master’s in their modality and are regulated by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). We use various artistic mediums to help individuals to express their emotions, thoughts and experiences. This unique and creative approach to healing aims to provide a safe and supportive space for individuals to process their feelings and to gain new insights.
Five core principles in creative therapies:
Projection and distancing
Being able to project thoughts and emotions onto an object, an activity, or arts-making within the therapy space creates a distance between the client and what is being explored. This can allow them to better connect with unconscious process, and provides a level of safety in the therapy. The client can talk about the object rather than about themself.
Therapeutic performance
People accessing creative therapies are often not consciously aware that they are working therapeutically. They may be exploring themselves in relationships, learning sensory processing skills, developing a sense of identity. As the work is allowed to go where it needs to go, the client may begin to make connections for themselves.
Empathy and connection
Using the arts in therapy sessions enables the therapist to focus on meeting the client where they are at, building rapport and a therapeutic relationship. We express empathy and connection through active listening, reflecting and validating feelings, and working holistically.
Transference and countertransference
Transference refers to the way the client may unconsciously project feelings, thoughts and attitudes from past experiences onto the therapist. In the art therapies, this can be seen in various ways: the client may identify strongly with certain characters or symbols, or they may relate to the therapist as a parental figure. Countertransference is the therapist’s own emotional response to the client.
Interactive witnessing
In arts therapies, the therapist is an attentive and non-judgmental observer of the client’s artistic process. As a witness, they provide a safe and supportive space where the client can explore emotions, thoughts and experiences.
